The Hidden Canal soundwalk – a unique collaboration between the MBBCS and Salford based arts group “Walk the Plank” has resulted in an innovative enticement to explore the initial 3 miles of the Salford Branch of the canal.
When Salford born musician Ewan Maccoll wrote “Dirty Old Town” he included the line “Dream a dream by the old canal”. This project rediscovers Salford’s hidden gem of a canal enabling it to wake from its slumber and be a source of recreation, play, heritage and community.
“Walk the Plank” paired 5 Salford / Greater Manchester artists with 5 European artists to create a Sound Walk along the route of the old canal.
Sample from the “ASTRAEUS” premiere on 18th May 2024. Composers: Fionnuala Dorrity and Mauro Amaral
Inspired by twilight and water, ‘Astraeus’ is a calling to the God of Dusk and a dual sonic interpretation of a world whose gates are open for only a brief window of time. The elements are in array as we all try to find ourselves a place in the descending darkness. Using field and hydrophone recordings, vocal improvisations, time-stretching techniques and samples of Britain’s night birds.
