In the 1960’s Salford’s local canal (the Manchester, Bolton & Bury Canal), that ran parallel to Upper Wharf Street, was buried under concrete and has remained hidden ever since.
Developer H2O Urban has submitted bizarre plans that would see the route of the waterway uncovered and then filled in again so that it can be turned into a footpath. Apartments would be built on the site of Outwood Wharf.
The heritage towpath itself, first laid down in 1797, which would be the obvious route for a footpath, would remain buried under earth.
If you would like to walk along the heritage towpath again, then join us in asking the developer to restore the towpath.
Don’t bury Salford’s canal heritage! Restore the towpath!
