In the distance can be seen “Bloody Bridge” (the entrance to the MBBC) and “Stephenson’s Bridge”.

For much of its length the line of the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal runs parallel to the River Irwell and thus offers the opportunity to create a number of off-road circular walking and cycling routes. The two waterways are connected by Peel Park, Frederick Road and Broughton Road/Cromwell Road for example.

The Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society (MBBCS) requests that the strategy commits to reinstating the towpath of the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal (MBBC) as a pedestrian and recreational cycle route. This would also facilitate the future restoration of sections of the canal over time and enhance connectivity both within and between Salford communities and beyond.

The strategy could include off-road routes along the canal towpath to/from Princes’ Bridge, Middlewood and on to Salford Crescent station and then up to the University campus and on to the Crescent Innovation North zone. This off road route would be healthier (less fumes, pollution, noise) and offer a more direct route to Aviva Arts Centre, River Irwell etc.
