Background
Thanks to funding from Bolton CVS, the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society is working with Manchester-based illustrator James Neville to create a series of engaging, story-led walking maps showcasing the local MB&B canal network.
Each route will explore different aspects of the canal’s rich character, from local heritage, ecology and architecture to contemporary culture, offering local people and visitors a unique way to discover and connect with the area.
The project aims to encourage more people to visit and enjoy the canal, increase their understanding and appreciation of this valuable local environment.
Get Involved
James has now produced a prototype extract from the first map and we’d love to hear from local residents, community groups and organisations to help shape the final series.
We’re keen to know whether there are topics, stories or features you’d like to see more or less of. Your feedback will play an important role in ensuring the maps meet the needs and interests of local people.
Please note – we are not requesting specific feedback on the details included within the map, just the style and content. The MBBCS will be reviewing and approving the content of the maps before publishing, if you are interested in joining the final review panel, please leave your details at the end of the survey and we will be in touch.
Please take a few minutes to complete our short survey and share your thoughts:
The survey will remain open until 5pm on Friday 13th November 2026.
Next Steps
We hope to complete the maps by the end of November, with the finished series published on the Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society website (www.mbbcs.org.uk) in mid-December.
The maps will be freely available online and can either be viewed digitally or downloaded and printed as PDF guides, making it easy for everyone to explore the canal at their own pace.
