Harnessing Developments for Restoration – David Barnes
David Barnes - Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal Society

The Manchester Bolton & Bury Canal is a hive of activity and not just because one of our active projects is to look at how to implement stretches of the canal for active travel, i.e. part of the Bee Network. In fact this was one area David didn't mention much in his presentation which looked at the exciting developments from Middlewood Locks (May Festival of Water and sound walk), Agecroft Harbour (potential archaeological dig and environmental improvement), the repair of the breach in Little Lever and the prospect of housing developments east of Radcliffe that could release funding for improvements such as raising Water Street. That's raising as in lifting it for boats to pass under, not setting it on fire. But it is all part of the society working hard to achieve its aim to restore the canal. That includes making a big noise about the current planning application at Upper Wharf Street to put a greenway on top of the canal. The success of restorations at places such as the Lichfield & Hatherton Canal show we are getting there with vision and ambition but we've got to make the case that restoring the canal will bring much happiness.
